Find Your Fun in the VW Golf GTI

July 28th, 2016 by

The 2016 Volkswagen Golf GTI is everything you expect and a few things you don’t. You’ll find all the performance, quality, and durability at a budget price. You might be surprised by the increased amount of muscle and the modern intelligence.

A History of Wow

Back in 1975, the original Golf GTI took a well-loved reliable runabout and made it fun. By adding Bosch fuel injection, VW built a 110 horsepower affordable rocket and gave birth to the term “hot hatch.” The Rabbit GTI came to the United States in 1983, after becoming a hit in Europe.

Four decades later, the competition is still playing catch-up. Nearly every automaker is producing some form of sporty hatchback, but the original is still one of the best.

Top 10 Again

For 10 consecutive years, the GTI has landed on Car and Driver’s 10 Best list. Why? They love the precision the GTI has that other higher-priced, more luxurious cars lack. They adore the muscle of the 2.0 liter inline four-cylinder. They admire the crisp performance of the six-speed manual.

Many Ways to Go

The Golf family gives you many choices. Select the practical standard Golf or the explosive Golf R. Consider the all-electric E-Golf. But for now, we’ll keep the discussion to the GTI, which gives you the most bang for your buck.

For only $24,995, you can have the two-door S version with 210 horsepower and 34 highway miles per gallon. The SE model provides keyless entry with push-button start, a panoramic sunroof, and leather seats.

For an additional $1495, add the Performance Package. You’ll get another 10 horsepower, upgraded brakes, and a torque-sensing limited-slip differential.

Want easier access to the rear seats? Pick the four-door version. You’ll also get the choice of the Autobahn version, featuring dual-zone climate control, 12-way power driver’s seat, and touch screen navigation.

More than Just Fun

It’s also a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS. Not only is it build to the rigid standards you’ve come to expect from German engineering, it’s as smart and aware as a 21st century car should be.

Volkswagen’s Driver Assistance Features include Front Assist, which uses forward sensors to alert you to a potential collision and apply the brakes quicker than you can react alone. Blind Spot Monitor helps you avoid accidents when changing lanes. Rear Traffic Alert warns you of unseen vehicles while backing out of a parking space. Park Assist helps you enter and exit a parallel parking spot. Adaptive Cruise Control helps you stay with the flow of traffic even when the flow changes speed.

Available VW Car-Net works with both Apple and Android phones to keep you connected. Maps, messaging, music, and more show on the center touch screen to make you and your GTI a synchronized unit. You can check the status of your car remotely and call for help in case of an emergency.

The world’s most exciting hatchback keeps getting better with more power, more technology, and the same VW quality you already love.
